Who is Slenderman?

There are many urban legends throughout the history of mankind, and with the internet there are now even more that exist. Of these many urban legends Slenderman has become one of the most popular internet meme urban legends around. However, the question remains true to those who have not heard of him. Who is Slenderman?

Slenderman is considered to be very passive/aggressive with his victims. While he is said to be a torturing soul, he will stalk his victims by showing himself to them causing them to become mentally unstable. While he stalks his prey, he will stalk them for months to years at a time. His appearance has been subjected to change as the years have gone on but recently he is considered to be a tall, slender man who has long arms and no face. His clothing is only that of a single business-type suit, with no certainty of whether it is cloth or his skin.

The legends have varied through times from the early 1600s in Germany to now. In the first accounts it is said he will do things such as remove organs and place them into bags while impaling his victims on to trees. It is believed that Slenderman will also stalk his target down until caught and vanish off with them without a single trace of where they have gone. It is said that the modern version of his story will cause electronic equipment to malfunction by causing glitches in equipment.

Slenderman’s abilities are said to be slenderwalking, time travel, mind control, and a form of camouflage. He also has a high importance among children as its preferred prey. Slenderwalking is a form of teleportation that he possesses to avoid being seen or noticed by his victims. Through his usage of teleportation from location to location, Slenderman will find his victims and torture them mentally.

Through what is referred to as “slender sickness” he will cause the victim to become highly paranoid, nose bleeds, nightmares, as well as hallucinations. After a period of these symptoms, Slenderman will abduct his victim from any nearby forest where their death will become them. It is a legend that the victims would be impaled by the branches of a tree to bleed to death and then each organ is removed and put into the plastic bags.

Within the 1990s through 2010 many bloggers and students have claimed to have been stalked by Slenderman and have video recordings of these events and occurrences. Speculation of them being falsified or true stories has yet to be truly known.

While there has been much fun with Slenderman, I do condone any of the violence that has gone alongside of this legend. People, it is an urban legend and fiction.

  1. Whenever I hear of Slenderman my mama instincts come to play. I can only think of the case that was recently tried of 2 12 year old girls that hurt their friend because they said Slenderman said to do it. It's so scary and sad.. BUT on a lighter a note.. I do remember being a kid and telling stories of the Lady of the Lake.. So freaking scary!

    1. Essentially the lady and the lake are much like Slenderman, I feel. I didn't know who Slenderman was actually until my friend (14 at the time) told me about him / the legend. I was so fascinated I wanted to know more.

  3. I wasn't aware of Slenderman until the Milwaukee incidents with the middle school girls. I am of an age now where I am not really interested in something like this but I totally understand the draw, especially this time of year.

  4. I live in SE Wisconsin where the 2 12 year old girls stabbed their friend in the name of Slenderman. The very sad part is that children are not understanding that Slenderman is a urban legend and is fiction. Many think he is real. Serious stuff! If you have any doubts about how terrible this is - please read online about the Wisconsin 12 year old girls that stabbed their friend. So very sad :(

  5. I just watched a documentary last night on hulu about urban legends (title of the movie is Killer Legends if you are interested). It discussed how all urban legends are created from historical facts. It was a pretty fascinating show.

They didn't, however, cover slenderman. I had no idea about slenderman until I heard of the girls in Wisconsin and then I was horrified that 12 year olds could commit such a hideous act.

  6. I only heard about Slenderman when I heard about the two 12 year olds in Wisconsin. Then I had to look up Slenderman to see what everything was about.

  10. Oh wow, I didn't know he was an actual thing. The only thing I ever new about him was from my boys talking about other kids telling them about a video game with him in it.
