Teenage Safety for Halloween

Halloween is a time for fun, family, friends, and of course candy. Through the act of trick or treating, children of all ages everywhere will be out and about. This is one of the most popular days of the year where anyone of any age will be able to go out and get free candy and ‘treats.’ The importance of staying safe this Halloween is not only in the hands of a parent, but in the hands of an individual. Teenagers often go out trick or treating with their friends by themselves so it is crucial to help guide these teenagers through a safe Halloween.

*Safety in Numbers*
Teenagers often go out with friends during Halloween, it is one of the safest ways for them to be safe and have a good time. Make sure that teenagers know staying with the group is the safest thing for them to do this Halloween. Friends should go up to the houses together, and meet at the end of the same driveway before moving on to the next house. If teenagers plan on going to a Halloween party, again it is important they stay with the group.

*Reflective Tape / Glow sticks*
Depending on the costume a teenager is wearing reflective tape may not be an option to their liking, so give them another option, glow sticks. Glow sticks can be found in bulk at any Halloween store, craft store, as well as at dollar stores. The glow sticks can be worn on their wrist, ankles, or around the neck as a necklace glow stick. Think of when they were kids and the glow sticks that were purchased at theme parks such as Disneyland. These were there to keep them feeling fun and funky, and help to keep them safe.

If the costume is a Disney princess, or some sort of skirt or pant suit, the reflective tape can be placed on the bottom of the legs or seams. This will in some cases add to the appeal of the costume, causing it to glow in the dark.

Glow in the dark nail polish and hair spray is also a fun and exciting way to help teenagers stand out without giving them the appeal of a ruined costume by reflective tape. These items can be found at local Wal-Mart as well as party supply stores like Party city.

*GPS*
Through technology advances and phones equipped with GPS locating devices, a teenager may be monitored through this app if concerned as to where the teenager will be. These apps can also be found through the iPhone and Android telephone devices. This would be a good thing for younger teenagers to make sure that they are going where they said, and keeping an eye on them without keeping a physical eye out.

*Curfew*
As a parent setting a curfew for the teenager is the best way to know they have a good time and are home safely at a definite time. Halloween is no different from any other night; except for they may be able to stay out later. No matter the time of curfew set, make sure the teenager knows it means to be home specifically at the set time, with of course some leniency. If a teenager is a few minutes late, no consequences are needed. Keeping their cell phone and checking in is also a simple way to make sure that teenagers are safe and having fun.

For more tips on Halloween safety for all ages the CDC has some wonderful tips. Through the safety tips mentioned above and these other tips from the CDC this Halloween will be a safe one for teenagers.

Where did the Halloween Costume Come From?

According to History.com the beginning of wearing costumes for Halloween can be dated back to the Celts. During the festival of Samhain it was believed that ghosts would return to earth. To celebrate the event the Druids built bonfires and burned crops and animals for sacrifice to the spirits. During their celebration they would wear costumes that were made from animal heads and skin. To avoid being recognized by their ghostly family members, these masks were often worn.

Later on in history rather than dressing in animal skins and heads, the Christians decided to honor the dead and wear costumes such as angels, saints and devils. While its timing varied from culture to culture, it also varied by name. In time the All Saints Day celebration become known as All Hallows Eve and later on Halloween.

When Halloween came to Maryland and the other colonies, the diverse beliefs from each ethnic group melded together forming what were referred to as play parties, where neighbors would share stories of the dead, dance and sing in celebration of the dead. In the 19th century new immigrants helped to make Halloween popular nationally. Originally more of a supernatural and superstitious celebration, the day became more a holiday for the colonies and states.

Through the history that started the tradition, it has now grown to a cultural phenomenon. Though dressing up as witches, ghouls, angels and devils is still done today, now even more types of costumes have become popular. The costumes of clowns, angry birds, mermaids, mythological gods and goddesses, and pumpkins are also commonly worn. Or for the adults more risqué costumes such as bartenders, French maids, or flappers are available.

To add to the fun and tradition of dressing up for Halloween there are often events such as costume contests hosted by night clubs, casinos or radio stations.  In some cases school activities or church events offer costume contests as well.

As each generation continues on, the spirit of Halloween and dressing up in costumes goes on and grows. While nowadays children and adults dress up in costumes for fun and not to avoid evil spirits the generations continue to have fun with it and show off their creativity and culture. For this year and every year on, pop culture icons such as Freddy Kruger, Michael Myers, and the Scream mask will live on as well.

Costumes at one point in history were meant to keep the spirits away, but now it is all about having fun, trick or treating, and having a good time with friends and family alike. No matter what the costume is during the season, Halloween is a great season and dressing up can be fun. Happy Halloween.

Who is Slenderman?

There are many urban legends throughout the history of mankind, and with the internet there are now even more that exist. Of these many urban legends Slenderman has become one of the most popular internet meme urban legends around. However, the question remains true to those who have not heard of him. Who is Slenderman?

Slenderman is considered to be very passive/aggressive with his victims. While he is said to be a torturing soul, he will stalk his victims by showing himself to them causing them to become mentally unstable. While he stalks his prey, he will stalk them for months to years at a time. His appearance has been subjected to change as the years have gone on but recently he is considered to be a tall, slender man who has long arms and no face. His clothing is only that of a single business-type suit, with no certainty of whether it is cloth or his skin.

The legends have varied through times from the early 1600s in Germany to now. In the first accounts it is said he will do things such as remove organs and place them into bags while impaling his victims on to trees. It is believed that Slenderman will also stalk his target down until caught and vanish off with them without a single trace of where they have gone. It is said that the modern version of his story will cause electronic equipment to malfunction by causing glitches in equipment.

Slenderman’s abilities are said to be slenderwalking, time travel, mind control, and a form of camouflage. He also has a high importance among children as its preferred prey. Slenderwalking is a form of teleportation that he possesses to avoid being seen or noticed by his victims. Through his usage of teleportation from location to location, Slenderman will find his victims and torture them mentally.

Through what is referred to as “slender sickness” he will cause the victim to become highly paranoid, nose bleeds, nightmares, as well as hallucinations. After a period of these symptoms, Slenderman will abduct his victim from any nearby forest where their death will become them. It is a legend that the victims would be impaled by the branches of a tree to bleed to death and then each organ is removed and put into the plastic bags.

Within the 1990s through 2010 many bloggers and students have claimed to have been stalked by Slenderman and have video recordings of these events and occurrences. Speculation of them being falsified or true stories has yet to be truly known.

To view some spooky and frightening Slenderman videos from Marble Hornets, visit their YouTube channel which has a mass majority of hits and views. For an extra spooky effect watch with the lights off.

Disclaimer:
While there has been much fun with Slenderman, I do condone any of the violence that has gone alongside of this legend. People, it is an urban legend and fiction.

Spring Cleaning Tips for Teens

Jump in to spring cleaning this year and get things organized in your room and get it looking the way you would like it to look all the time. Spring cleaning is often something that is done during the warmer months of the year however it can be done during the winter months as well if desired. For this article readers will be able to use the five following tips to get their teenager to spring clean their rooms and keep them organized for the home, their guests and themselves.

Pick a day
Before starting any type of spring cleaning it is important to pick the day to do it. Picking a day can be done easily by looking at the personal calender and seeing what day is free from anything else. Depending on the amount of cleaning or deep cleaning that needs to be done, it may become an all day affair to spring clean. Once a day has been picked to clean it is best to mark this day on the calender or write a "post it" note to keep on a mirror or the computer monitor to be sure not to forget this date.

Make a to do list
Now that a date has been chosen for spring cleaning the next step is to make a to do list. Making a spring cleaning check list is an ideal way to stay organized and not worry about forgetting to do something during the cleaning process. This list can be as detailed as needed for the cleaning process. List items might include, clean out drawers, rearrange furniture, wipe down mirrors and windows, go through clothes, and vacuuming. No matter what goes on this list it is important to write it down. Crossing each item off the list will help keep teenagers organized during the spring cleaning as well as help them to see how much needs to be done.

Sort into three boxes
The items that will be sorted in these boxes are as follows: garbage, goodwill items and items that are truly out of place in the room. This can be very beneficial to getting a room organized and help with spring cleaning tasks. Sorting through items that are underneath the bed, in the closet or inside the desk can help tremendously by ridding the room of items no longer needed. The closet is often the most important place to use these three boxes. Clothes might not fit any longer or ever been worn. If this is the case they can be placed in to the donation or goodwill box. Any trash of course will be taken out to the garbage can and items in the miscellaneous or out of place box can be returned to rightful owners and locations.

Listen to music
Use upbeat tempo music to help boost energy during the cleaning process. Music that is from their iPod, or from Spotify can be used to keep teenagers going and give them a sense of their own world as they clean up. This can be music they enjoy at any time, or using Spotify radio it teenagers can find new music that is much like their favorite music. If they are a fan of music from the 60s and 70s these songs are also great for cleaning.

Reorganize
If the teenager finds that they would like to rearrange their room by moving their bed or simply the dresser, give them a hand. Changing the way the bed is or even where things are can help open up a room and give it a whole new appearance. Perhaps they bought a new piece of furniture or a stand alone mirror they would like to put in their room, help them with this. No matter what it is that they change, it can truly help the room feel like a new and improved room.

With each of these tips teenagers will have the room they have desired for a while as well as be able to keep it clean throughout the rest of the year with ease. Spring cleaning as mentioned before is not only meant for the warmer months. Spring cleaning is much like a state of mind, do it at any time that is desired for a clean and organized room.

Easy Diy Valentines Day Gifts for him

Valentine’s Day is full of romantic notions, love, appreciation and the joy of being with loved ones. If there is currently not a specific someone in your life, you may find that you would like to give something to your crush. Each of the gifts below will help you to give them something to show you care as well as something that you have made yourself.

Their favorite cookies
By marcolm
Baked goods are an excellent do-it-yourself gift for your special someone. Do you know their favorite type of cookies or candy? Find a recipe for it online, or in your Good Housekeeping cookbook and get started. Bake their favorite cookies and candies and place them in a plastic heart-decorated bag and tie with a red ribbon to keep closed.

If you’re going to be traveling a bit to give these goods to him, put them in a Tupperware box with a red lid, and decorate the lid with red and pink paper cutout hearts and tape to add decoration.

Date basket
Shannon Brown suggests placing 12 brown envelopes into a wicker basket. These envelopes will be labeled with the name of each month on the front, and inside will be a pre-planned date idea. These date ideas can be anything that you will both enjoy. Whether it is a day at the shooting range, a night out on the town, roller skating, or a retro date night, they should be fun and creative for the two of you.

“I Love…” trait book
In this fun and modernized do-it-yourself Valentine’s Day gift for him, you will be showing him everything you love about him in pictures and words. For each letter of the alphabet you will choose a trait about him you love. Look online or through pictures of the two of you and pick one for each letter. Put them all together in a photo album online or in a picture book that you have made from scratch much like a scrapbook.

This is a wonderful way to show him that you care and everything you love about him. Not only will he be able to see it but anytime he is missing you, all he will have to do is refer to the book and be reminded of everything you adore about him.

Love coupon book
Sometimes the simple gift of giving is enough. Rather than giving him a coupon for his favorite restaurant or store, give him the gift of love coupons. These can be made using simple colored pieces of construction paper, preferably red, pink and white. Using a permanent marker, write down things you would like to let him have. Whether it’s a “Go out for guys night without a fight” or “Good for a one hour neck rub,” each coupon will be valued and enjoyed by him at any time.

Make each coupon count by having them be worth something you know he will enjoy. Coupons can be anything that you feel is necessary, if you want to make it something sexy and fun then be sure to make it flirty and for his eyes only.

Each of these gift ideas is a fun and exciting way to spruce up this Valentine’s Day. A homemade gift is from the heart, takes time and effort and will bring a giant smile to his face when he receives it. Be sure to give it to him before or on Valentine’s Day to make it a special night. After all, Valentine’s Day is a day of love, devotion and matters of the heart.

The best Thanksgiving Seating Arrangement

Thanksgiving is not only a day for thanks, but it is also a day of lively conversation and laughter, as well as delicious and tasty food. Thanksgiving meals are a great way to celebrate with family and friends and enjoy their company. If hosting a Thanksgiving get-together, the seating arrangement is important and should not take too much effort. Included are some tips to get you started and get the table settings perfect and ideal for everyone.

First thing make sure you have enough chairs and dining tables for every guest to eat and a place for the food to sit. Can all of the guests sit at one table, or will there be a place for the adults to sit, and then the children at their own table? Sometimes this can cause a problem as children may be different ages and not always get along. Teenagers can often want to sit at the adult table, and not with the younger kids.

If there are more than two tables being used have a head of the table or a close friend, someone trusted, that can be a counter host for those tables. Meaning if somebody wants an extra biscuit, then there will be somebody to give it to them.  The best thing to do is to make sure that there is a place where all food can be reached and put aside and stay out of the way.

Another thing to consider when having a seating arrangement are the couples, meaning husbands and wives, boyfriend and girlfriend, and of course, family members. Often people seat these groups together or next to each other. One way to do this to step out of the box is by splitting up the couple and having them sitting across from each other, creating an ability for them to mingle and speak to other relatives and guests

Ultimately the goal as a host and creating a seating arrangement is to make sure that all guests are happy and enjoying themselves with no limitations or constrictions. Make sure there is enough leg room and arm room so people don’t bump in to each other.

Now, the truth is, if you have a southpaw in the family, that too is important to take into consideration. Putting a southpaw person towards the head of the tables may be better. This will prevent them from bumping elbows with a right handed eater.

All in all it is important to remember to keep everyone happy and make sure everyone is enjoying themselves. The distant cousins that never got along, they’re probably not the ones to sit next to each other. Keep in mind what is best for everyone when making a seating arrangement. If needed get seating cards, and help your guests see where they will be sitting.

6 Steps to Decorate a Doorway

The door is the first thing seen when it comes to the home and that’s one of the first things that should appear the most inviting. With a beautiful doorway guests and salesmen alike will truly enjoy the walkway and doorway they are about to enter. Included are five tips and tricks on how to have a decorated doorway that is dressed to impress.

Address numbers are often located near the doorway, or on the side of the house. The best thing to do is find a set of hanging numbers that are catchy to your eye and you believe are easy to read from the street. Sometimes when mailmen, neighbors, or party goers are trying to find the house, they look for these numbers. Address numbers can be found from different places from Wal-Mart to a local home improvement store. Bigger chain stores such as Home Depot also carry a variety of numbers.

The doormat is another item that is often viewed at the first point of approaching the doorway. The entry mat or door mat can be simple, or have a fun and exciting design. There are also doormats that come with witty sayings such as this one from Target. No matter the doormat that is chosen remember to keep it clean and free of debris from weather and people’s shoes.

Solar lights are a wonderful addition to the outside of a doorway as well as the walkway to the door’s entry. Choosing fun solar lights in the shapes of butterflies or dragonflies can also be done. There are a variety of solar lights available on the market in shapes and sizes of many. The perfect solar light can be found through some shopping around, or by asking an associate from a home improvement store. It is important to keep these clean, and make sure that they are held down correctly to avoid ware and tear.

A new paint coat for the door and exterior walls of course will help the entire outside of the house. By picking a new door or finding a bright bold color like red to paint the door it will give the entire front of the house a solid look. The bright door will draw in attention and help the doorway to look classy and well put together. Try searching your local paint store for the perfect swatches, or find a new door at a hardware department store.

A plant in a decorative pot can bring an outstanding appearance to your doorway. Not only will a potted plant add some extra greenery to your yard but will help the doorway stand out. If there is a smaller entry way something such as a wreath for the door can be a perfect addition for decoration. These can be festive for holidays and the entire season. Check a local craft store such as Michael’s for already made or materials to make one on your own.

Remember, during holiday seasons such as Halloween and Christmas, the doorway can be decorated using special pieces that can be purchased or made at home by the family. Whatever the decorations are, the doorway will surely impress all those who come near or pass by.

How to have a Stress Free Christmas

Christmas time is full of gift wrapping, the exchange of gifts and holiday spirit. While this is true, sometimes stress can come with the holiday and people can forget that there are ways to avoid this from happening. Stress doesn’t have to take over your life during the Christmas season; it can be pushed aside and avoided with a few tips.

Whip out the coupons before buying Christmas presents for friends and family. With the wide array of sales that is almost always going on during the season coupons are often in newspapers, weekly advertisements and of course found on the internet. Whether it is buying the items for presents or for things such as baking necessities, coupons.com can be a great place to pick up printable coupons online.

Another tip to avoid holiday stress is to print your own address labels. These labels can be made up on an excel worksheet, or word document. By creating your labels this way and saving them on to the computer you have them to access at any time of the year. Pick label sheets up from an office department store such as Staples to make sure you have the correct sized labels needed for your printer.

Printing labels out this way will help create less stress for Christmas presents to be sent out via mail, as well as not having to hand write addresses on Christmas cards to be sent.

Wrap the presents purchased the same day they are bought to avoid holding off until the last minute to wrap Christmas presents. This will help keep the gifts organized and wrapped so they are ready to be put underneath the tree. If the gift is for a secret Santa or a gift exchange, this is also a wonderful way to avoid stress for those types of events.

Have emergency gifts for extra guests such as boxes of chocolate. There can be unexpected guests at Christmas dinners and parties sometimes, or someone may have forgotten to bring a gift for the exchange. If you find this is the case something as kind and delicious as a box of chocolates can work perfectly. It is something that people can enjoy, eat, and not feel guilty about taking as it was a gift.
