The 5 Most Baffling Things About Degrassi: The Next Generation

♩ Whatever it Takes... I know I can make it through. ♩

There is a lot about Degrassi: TNG that gets people thinking. There have been so many story lines inside this hit television show, it's hard to know where to begin. Some of the story lines are so ahead of their times, it's insane. This show, even though it originally aired in the early 2000s can still be relative today. Included below are five of the most mind baffling things to happen on Degrassi the Next Generation, not to be confused with Degrassi's Next Class.

Activist Emma

Every school has that one person whom thinks they're the one who can solve all the world's problems. In this high school, that is definitely Emma. Ironically, for a couple seasons she was even known as "cause girl." She is one of the best characters to date, and she knows what she wants to do in life, and is not afraid to show it. She does have her own fair share of misfortunane including anorexia, and an STI scare, but even those don't stop her from being all she can. Whatever it takes, she can make it through.

Emma is the type of girl many strive to be. She is smart, funny, sophisticated, and a bit of a rebel with a cause. She has hosted many protests and has even stripped off a dress to prove it's not okay to body shame, even the smallest of woman. Whenever there is a fight, Emma will be on the right side of things. Emma really is, a Cause girl.

The Ravine

Did you guys know that EVERYTHING happens at the Ravine? Seriously, from doing drugs to sexual relations, proposals and fights. Nothing skips a beat here. We first see the infamous Ravine in season 3, when Emma and the Gang decides to do a cleanup of trash. Sure, it starts off there innocent and sweet, but oh lord do things escalate. From Season 4 on, the ravine becomes THE place for the "bad seeds" to hang out. So much happens here, I'm surprised no cops have cleaned up the area, or arrested anyone there. Who knows, with 10+ seasons, there could be an arrest, or something else to happen here. Either way, in the Degrassi world; if you want to party, you head on down to the ravine.

Pregnant Teenagers

First comes love, than comes marr... oh wait, first comes love, then comes a baby. Come on, Degrassi! Does anyone in this school pay attention in health class? From season one through ten, there have been at least 4 pregnancy scares, or pregnancies. One character even has a child before she's 15 years old. Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying it doesn't happen! Kids make mistakes, and as do adults. Condoms break, aren't used or birth control is missed. Goodness me though, can we get a new story line besides someone having a baby as a teenager? We've got The Secret Life of an American Teenager, for that here in the U.S. though, so I suppose Canada, might not have had their own. I'll let this one pass, for now.

Abuse is NOT OKAY

Early in the seasons we meet a boy named Rick. Without giving away too many spoilers we'll say this much. If it starts with beating up your girl, it can easily escalate to something a lot worse. Something unexpected by everyone, including the abuser himself. Rick was a seemingly sweet nerdy guy, who had an innocent crush on a girl named Terri. He was shy, but made his move by surprising his girl with a rose on her locker. He continued to try and woo her from afar, until things worked out and she found out it was him. Pushed by her friends to follow her need for love, Terri decided to go for him.

Unfortunately, Terri wasn't the only one in this show to be abused by her partner. In later seasons we meet another character whom is thrown down the stairs by her boyfriend. This resulting in her to have tremendous bruising, but unfortunately not everyone believes it's abuse. It's a crazy thing to believe a show can hit on such a hot topic twice within only a few seasons, but if it doesn't get the point across, what does?  Abuse is not okay, whether it's from a spouse, a significant other, a child, a friend, or a parent. If you know anyone who is being abused, please respect their wishes, but help them receive the help they need.

Jimmy Brooks is DRAKE

Well if you are into Rap music today, you probably already know who DRAKE is. Well, if you're truly a fan of his, you would know Drake is and will forever be, Jimmy Brooks from Degrassi Community school. Not only did he start off by being a tad geeky, but he got a glam up like no other. Between being a kind of silly kid who dated Ashley, he became something great. Jimmy was the type of guy to stand up for his beliefs, his friends and never let anybody down. He was an all around good guy, whose life took an unexpected turn. If you've already seen it, or seen spoilers, you know Jimmy Brooks was shot by a classmate. He not only knew who his shooter was, but he should not have been the target. Unfortunately, to cover himself, his own buddy made a lie up, and caused Jimmy to be targeted. It's a whole thing.

Throughout the series Jimmy goes from an average Jim, to a start basketball player; to a young man in a wheelchair who is talented artist, and rap artist. Thanks to his good buds, he pursued his dream for a while and even opened up a T-shirt shop with Spinner. This was a fun time, it's a shame that things went astray. During some of the Jimmy seasons we also get to hear "Drake" portray his rap freestyle skills. People who didn't know it then, we sure do now. Drake hit it big, and never left his Degrassi life behind.
